Inside the Design Studio: An Inspiration Intervention

by Melanie, June 6, 2014

We’ve been insanely busy lately.  The entire team is in constant creative motion working on fabulous  projects for clients new and old.  We’re also cooking up some pretty exciting company changes.  We can’t wait to share all of our latest work with you in the coming months.

In the meantime, we continue to spend a significant portion of each day searching high and low for new products, fresh ideas, and the best applications of emerging trends (spoiler alert: embroidery is back).  As part of that process, we regularly meet with sales representatives from various furniture, fabric, rug and accessory companies.

These meetings may sound fun, but as designers, some days it seems like we’ve seen it all before.  Other days we are like kids in a candy store taking in all the delicious opportunities to sweeten up a design project.

Yesterday we met with our Kravet rep, Rich.  There is little that helps keep the design momentum moving more than sample after sample of gorgeous fabric.  Our meeting with Rich was like an inspiration intervention.  In fact, it was such a good meeting that we placed several orders right on the spot.

Here is a look inside the design studio as we review samples with Rich…

Rich kicks it off with the first fabric and we all gave it the thumbs up — love the sheen of the gray.
Embroidery detailing and Lurex (not Lorax!) thread gives a sophisticated shine.
Mel and Rich debate the finer points of rub counts.
Keep an eye out for this fabulous fabric in a living room we are working on.
This guy can fold and unfold fabric faster than a speeding bullet!

Note the wallpaper and rug samples that Rich pulls out of his bag during a presentation.  A fun way to contemplate new combinations — and pretty much what we designers do all day every day inside the studio.

We loved the textural pattern here and in some fun color-ways too.
A crisp combination of gray and white.
Mel fires off an order while Rich takes notes.
Here’s another great fabric that you will be seeing soon in a client space.
The patchwork is individually attached so it looks like a hand-made quilt.
The texture and detailed embroidery is awesome in person.
Indigo Love

We were singing the blues (and grays), in a good way, for most of the meeting.  Did you know that sales representatives usually present their products in a similar color palette to help the eye transition between samples?

This collection shows really well together, as Kate demonstrates with some clever collaging:

But it wasn’t all bluesy….

Here’s a fun embroidered fabric with a fresh color combo.
Embroidery is clearly trending…
You could actually just frame this memo sample for a cute piece of art.
More fun collage mixing with embroidery and appliqué embellishments.
Reviewing fabric samples is a very hands-on experience.
Mixing and matching some Kravet products for a client project.

That was fun Rich — thanks for the inspired presentation.   Now, we have to get back to work!
